The patients of physical rehabilitation centers have special needs, which yoga will be able to address. By offering yoga as a complementary therapy, physical rehabilitation centers can take care of the needs of individuals as a whole, leading to a swifter and less stressful recovery. Physical rehabilitation is a targeted treatment that focuses on fixing a specific physical problem. While specialized treatment is absolutely essential after an injury or surgery, this only addresses part of the issue.
The entire body is negatively impacted after an injury, with muscles atrophying and deteriorating as the result of impaired physical function. Having patients participate in yoga practice on a regular basis helps safeguard against the physical weakness that is common after injury. Maintaining the flexibility and muscle mass of the entire body shortens a patient’s recovery time significantly.
In addition, yoga may bring to light underlying physical issues that lead to the injury in the first place. Improper alignment is one of the most common causes of physical injury, but it’s also very difficult to spot during a typical physical examination. Correcting errors in posture, gait and alignment will speed up recovery and prevent future re-injury at the same time. When medical professionals keep an open mind and work alongside skilled yoga instructors, yoga becomes a powerful diagnostic tool during the physical rehabilitation process. It gives valuable insight into the condition of the body as a system that wouldn’t have been available otherwise. This leads to improved treatments and faster results.
Yoga also addresses the mental and emotional needs of physical rehabilitation patients. Those who have suffered severe physical injuries typically have a lot of fear, stress and anxiety to deal with. Studies have shown that attitude and mindset play a crucial role during the recovery process, so improving mood and morale is important for success. Practicing gentle forms of yoga will reduce stress levels and give patients an opportunity to exercise their bodies in a relaxed and positive manner.
Yoga is a powerful complementary therapy that increases the effectiveness of other treatments, and this makes it ideal for physical rehabilitation centers. We are at the beginning of a great leap forward in physical therapy and standard medicine as traditional healing modalities are becoming accepted by medical science. Patients are not asking for magic, but less painful solutions to problems help everyone involved in the recovery process.
