Getting injured can be a nuisance and recovering from an injury takes effort. Whether it’s a small injury or something more serious, you could find that it disrupts your life – potentially causing you to put work, sports, activities and goals on hold. Many of us are eager to return things to normal. But it’s important to be patient and recover properly. Below are just a few common mistakes that people make on their healing journey – and what to do instead.
Self-Diagnosing your Injury
One of the biggest mistakes that people make is self-diagnosing their injury. While the internet can provide a wealth of information, you should consider whether it’s best to check in with a doctor first before coming up with your own recovery plan. Too many people mistake fractures for sprains and end up making them worse. If it’s a pain that lasts a few days, consider seeing a healthcare professional – just to be safe. There are still healthcare resources you can use to help with your recovery, but make sure that you’re also listening to the advice of your doctor.
Not Getting Enough Rest for Recovering From An Injury
Rest is essential to healing. This could include not putting weight on a leg for a certain period of time or not using your arm for activities like driving, as well as making sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get enough rest could result in your injury failing to heal properly. If a doctor advises you to refrain from certain activities, follow their advice so that you don’t end up with a long-term injury.
Skipping Physical Therapy When Recovering From an Injury
Physical therapy can be a game-changer when it comes to rehabilitation. A physical therapist can teach you how to regain strength, motion and flexibility. If it’s been advised that you attend classes, consider signing yourself up for a few. Neglecting physical therapy could result in a greater risk of slower healing or even re-injury. For a positive outcome, recovering from an injury cannot be rushed or ignored.
Neglecting Nutrition and Hydration
What you eat and drink can be important to the healing process. A balanced diet of vitamins, minerals and proteins will help with muscle and bone repair. It’s also important to stay hydrated as this will help with healthy blood flow and transportation of nutrients to the right places in the body. Don’t resort to eating lots of junk food – physical inactivity could increase the chance of weight gain and you could find that such foods increase inflammation leading to unnecessary pain.
Not Taking Precautions Against Repeat Injuries
It’s important to consider how you sustained your injury and what you can do to prevent it from occurring again. Repeat injuries involving the same body part are very common – certain bones, muscles or tendons may be weakened and more susceptible to future injuries. As a result, you need to put in place protective measures so that you’re not in the same situation again several months down the line.
If the injury was out of your control, then there may not be anything you can do. However, if something you did directly led to the injury, think about what you could have done differently to prevent it. Successfully recovering from an injury gives you time to consider a plan for prevention after changes are incorporated into your lifestyle.
