Yoga and the Power of Intuition

The power of intuition is often heightened during Yoga practice. Intuition is generally defined as the ability to obtain knowledge outside the perimeters of the conscious, analytical mind. A challenging practice that allows a Yogi or Yogini to enter into a state of meditative flow will offer him or her the ability to intuit answers to questions that may have otherwise remained elusive. The state of meditation that many practitioners experience during a flowing Yoga practice allows them to witness and tap into their own creative wisdom as it arises from the depths of their non-linear mind.


The non-linear mind is usually referred to as right-brain thinking. Left-brain thinking, on the other hand, is dominated by logical and rational thought processes. These thought processes are critically important to functioning well in our contemporary, tech savvy world. However, logical and analytical thought processes have their own inherent limitations. Allowing our rational and analytical minds to rest during a meditative Yoga practice allows the symbolic, intuitive part of the mind to offer solutions that may have previously remained ineffable.


Intuition and a State of Flow

This intuitive, non-linear state is often referred to as a state of flow. Many people experience this flowing state during artistic activities, such as painting or sculpting. A non-linear state of flow is also often experienced when individuals participate in strenuous physical exercise that requires all of one’s concentration and attention. People frequently report experiencing a state of flow while running, playing golf or rock-climbing. Activities that produce a state of flow quickly shift analytical thinking patterns to the intuitive, non-linear part of the mind.


In terms of a Yoga class, a practice that weaves together specific pranayama techniques into a flowing sequence of challenging Yoga asanas will demand a student’s complete attention. As the mind settles into one-pointed awareness, the ability to rationally analyze every moment will diminish and the tactile, intuitive part of the mind will become more dominant. In this way, creative solutions to seemingly impossible problems will arise from within. When a Yoga student moves through the postures in this way, the intuitive mind will also be able to internally guide the student with the wisdom of which Yoga postures and pranayama techniques will be the most healing and beneficial to incorporate into his or her practice today.
