As a Chair Yoga instructor, you will teach students of varying age groups and health conditions as well as in varying environments. Due to the inclusive nature of a Chair Yoga practice, our students will learn to assist many different student types (ex. Seniors, Office Workers, Students in Rehab, etc.). Through this program, you will develop an understanding of Chair Yoga practices and methodologies, as well as understand how to create Lesson Plans and facilitate them for any student that you teach.
This course covers dozens of postures and includes about 6 hours of videos, 7hrs of audio clips, about 600 photos, and 25+ example Lesson Plans to help make this course interactive and easy to understand.
Throughout this course, you will rediscover the asanas, refresh on adjustment and modification practices, develop a deeper understanding of using a Chair as your main prop, as well as refresh your understanding of contraindications. Pranayama techniques are also reviewed to help deepen your Chair Yoga practice along with further developing your understanding of anatomy and helping students with limited ranges of motion. We also dive into common health challenges that your students may have so that you can safely and knowledgeably teach students of all backgrounds. You will further your understanding of prop use, proper alignment, how slight alterations of a pose can enhance or reduce effectiveness, review safety precautions, and how the body, breath, and mind are all fundamentally linked. Sequencing and Lesson Plan creation, for a variety of health conditions (both physical and mental) are also covered.
Additionally, a refresher on the non-physical side of Yoga through studying Yogic Philosophy, relaxation techniques, meditation, and Yoga Teacher ethics are reviewed.
Our Curriculum

This section reviews Yogic Philosophy and its importance to a Chair Yoga practice. This lesson also sets up the next lesson which describes how Yogic Philosophies can be used to help our students.
-
Health Challenges in Chair Yoga
Although Chair Yoga is for everyone, due to its gentle nature, many students come to this style to heal. This lesson goes over common physical, psychological, and emotional challenges that your student(s) may have to help you better understand these conditions and help support your students. Through this understanding, our teachers will be able to create lesson plans better suited to their student(s) needs. Some conditions covered are: Heart and Circulatory Problems, Osteoporosis, Arthritis, Joint Replacement, Lung Disease, Chronic Pain, Cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, Anxiety, Depression, Chronic Stress, and PTSD. Safety and advice are also discussed here.
-
Body Mechanics and Teaching Tools
Understanding how our bodies function and proper alignment are especially important in Chair Yoga classes. In this lesson we cover common body mechanics and how to help our students move without injury. We also review communicating with our students, how observing and reading your class is important, and how to assist the different students that you will teach.
-
Pranayama Techniques
The Pranayama techniques that are used during a Chair Yoga class are an important part of helping your students prepare their mind and body for class. Multiple techniques are covered in this section, however, the main techniques covered, with video demonstrations, are Three-Part Breath, Ujjayi, Kapalbhati, Alternate Nostril Breathing, Bhastrika, and Sitali.
-
Learning the Asanas
This 5-part lesson thoroughly covers the asanas with a focus on a Chair Yoga class setting. Since Chair Yoga practices focus on adjusting the practice to meet the needs of your students, these lessons dive into many of the most commonly practiced Chair Yoga postures and provide more in-depth information on modifications and variations of the asanas. They also review the benefits and contraindications for each asana as well as cover the doshas that are affected. Some example sequences are also included in this section.
-
Meditation
Here we review meditation practices and how they fit into a Chair Yoga class.
-
Sequencing
This section is comprised of additional example Chair Yoga sequences. Since Chair Yoga is about catering the practice to the needs of your students, sequencing based on certain parts of the body is common. We cover sequences that range from focusing on a certain parts of the body (upper back, knees, shoulders, etc.) to particular goals (de-stress, building endurance, boosting immunity, etc) to mental health needs (depression, anxiety, stress, etc.). Sequences are provided both in text as well as audio clips.

Why Would an Experienced Yoga Instructor Want to Teach Chair Yoga?
Are you an experienced yoga instructor wondering why anyone would teach chair yoga? Or maybe you’re curious about the benefits of practicing yoga in a chair. Let’s explore why even seasoned instructors might want to delve into teaching and practicing chair yoga. From increased accessibility to unique challenges, there’s more to this practice than meets the eye. So get ready to expand your understanding of what it means to be a versatile and inclusive yoga teacher!
What Kind of Students Want Chair Yoga?
An experienced yoga instructor may want to take a chair yoga teacher training course for various reasons. For one, chair yoga is an excellent way to make the practice accessible to students of all ages and abilities. Additionally, chair yoga can be a great way to provide a gentle, relaxing practice for students looking to wind down and de-stress. Finally, teaching chair yoga can be a great way for instructors to give back to their community by offering a healing, restorative practice.
Why Should Yoga Teachers Care About Student Accessibility?
The evidence is apparent when considering the benefits: increased flexibility, improved strength, better balance and coordination, and reduced stress levels. What about Chair Yoga? Is there a reason why an experienced yoga instructor would want to teach this type of yoga?
The answer is student accessibility. By offering Chair Yoga classes, you can make yoga accessible to people of all ages and abilities. This is especially important for those with limited mobility or new to yoga.
Chair Yoga offers a safe and supportive environment for students to practice in. It also allows students to modify poses to their own ability and comfort level. As a result, Chair Yoga classes can be more inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
So why not take a Chair Yoga certification course for experienced teachers? You may find that it’s the perfect way to help your students relax, de-stress, and enjoy the many benefits of yoga.
I Teach Chair Yoga But Never Took a Course
We are under scrutiny if any accident occurs in a class we teach. We play a dangerous legal liability game when we teach any Yoga without certification. Please don’t take our word for it; research legal liability and accidents.
Let’s say your defense is as follows:
“I began practicing yoga over 20 years ago and have been teaching for 15 of those years. I never took a specific chair yoga course, but I have taken countless workshops and training on various aspects of yoga, including anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology.”
An injured student, hungry lawyer, and a court might ask, “Why didn’t you take a chair yoga teacher training course?” Many people – especially seniors or those with physical limitations – can benefit from a formally trained instructor during yoga practice in a chair.
Student Benefits
One of the great things about chair yoga is that it can be modified to meet the needs of each student. It is a safe and gentle way for people of all ages and abilities to practice yoga. Chair yoga can help increase flexibility, strength, and balance; improve circulation; and reduce stress.
Student Safety in Chair Yoga
Regarding student safety in chair yoga, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First and foremost, always ensure your students are adequately seated or standing, depending on the posture or technique being practiced.
Another important safety consideration is to ensure that the chairs you use for your class are sturdy and stable. You don’t want your students tipping over in their chairs or having them collapse underneath them.
Finally, be aware of your students’ limitations. If you have a student who has a history of medical problems, for example, be sure to modify the poses and movements accordingly. Teaching chair yoga can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it’s essential to keep your student’s safety in mind at all times.
Establishing a Safe Track Record When Teaching
When considering teaching yoga, safety is always the top priority. While chair yoga is a gentle and safe form of yoga, there are still some things to consider when teaching this class type.
Here are a few tips for establishing a safe track record when teaching chair yoga:
1. Ensure your students are properly seated in their chairs before class begins.
2. Avoid any sudden or jerky movements during the class.
3. Pay close attention to your students and make sure they are comfortable and not in pain.
4. Modify poses as needed to accommodate different abilities and levels of comfort.
5. Always end the class with a seated relaxation session to allow students to leave the practice slowly.
Who Cares About Liability?
If you’re a yoga instructor looking to expand your teaching repertoire, you may wonder why you should bother with chair yoga. After all, isn’t that just for old people or those with injuries?
As it turns out, there are plenty of good reasons to try chair yoga – even if you’re neither old nor injured! Here are four reasons why an experienced yoga instructor might want to teach this type of class:
1. It’s a great way to introduce yoga to beginners.
2. It can be adapted to suit all levels of fitness and ability.
3. It’s ideal for those with limited mobility or recovering from injury.
4. It’s perfect for corporate wellness programs or other settings where space is limited. Chairs are available in offices, which makes teaching this style in an office accessible to everyone.
So, if you’re looking to broaden your teaching horizons, chair yoga teacher training may be just the thing. Who knows – you might even enjoy it as much as your students!
Practical Value of Continuing Education for Yoga Teachers
Yoga teachers can find much value in continuing their education, even if they have been teaching for years. There are always new techniques and approaches to learning. By keeping up with the latest research, yoga teachers can ensure they provide their students with the best possible experience. Additionally, continuing education can help yoga teachers stay motivated and excited about their practice, which can inspire their students.
You Learn How to Modify Postures for Yoga Students
As an experienced yoga instructor, you know how to modify postures for students of all levels. When teaching chair yoga, you may need to modify many poses to make them accessible for your students. For example, if students have trouble balancing, you can have them sit in a chair with one foot on the ground. Or, if a student has trouble reaching the floor, you can use a yoga block or blanket to prop under their feet. Modifying the poses can help your students get the most out of their practice.
Ultimately, All Your Classes Improve
As an experienced yoga instructor, you know that all types of yoga classes can benefit students. While chair yoga may not be the most physically challenging style, it is still a great workout and can help improve flexibility, range of motion, and balance. In addition, chair yoga can be a great way to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Finally, learning to modify poses for students opens creativity within your mind.
Knowledge Creates Safer Yoga Classes
While most yoga classes focus on mat-based exercises, chair yoga provides a unique opportunity for instructors to help students of all abilities experience the benefits of yoga. Chair yoga is especially beneficial for those with limited mobility or new to yoga.
With chair yoga, students can feel more comfortable and confident in their practice, knowing that they have a chair’s support if needed. This can help create a safer environment for everyone in the class. A chair can make a big difference to a student standing in Tree Pose, and you can always teach them a Seated Tree Pose.
In addition, experienced yoga instructors can use their knowledge to adapt poses and movements to be safe and accessible for all students in any class. By teaching chair yoga, instructors can provide a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone to learn and grow in their practice.
Conclusion
Teaching chair yoga can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for experienced yoga instructors. The benefits of teaching chair yoga go beyond providing classes for those unable to do traditional forms of exercise due to physical limitations. Chair yoga is a great way to reach new students, provide modifications that make poses accessible to all levels, and even offer the opportunity for creative sequencing in class. Regardless of the reason, if you’re an experienced instructor looking to expand your practice into something new, then chair yoga could be a perfect way!

Leanne –
We have spent the last year learning about Hatha and Chair yoga through Paul’s long distance program. The benefit is that you can do the program at a pace that fits within your lifestyle. We are now certified in both types of yoga and feel confident in our knowledge and teaching . We chose the option of doing our practical in person and highly recommend this as the feedback is invaluable. The cost is affordable and the scope of learning material is abundant. Staff is courteous, friendly and no question is too small…thank you Paul. Leanne

Kathleen O’Keefe, RYT 200 –
Aura Wellness provided me with a comprehensive and challenging chair yoga training. Through their self-study program, I was able to accomplish certification by working locally with my own students. All the chair yoga training programs I researched crammed their trainings into a few short days and required additional expenditures for travel and lodging. Aura Wellness enabled me to take my time to implement, practice and thoroughly research all aspects and benefits of chair yoga. In addition, the on-line newsletters provided great support and the video exam supplied valuable in depth analysis of my own teaching. Kathleen O’Keefe, RYT 200 St. Louis, Missouri

Elana Steinberg Greengus –
9 years ago I received my yoga teacher certification from a yoga school near me, in Chicago. I teach chair yoga in nursing homes and a retirement home, in addition to regular yoga classes in other settings. I wanted to increase my skills and become certified in chair yoga. I researched online and found Aura Wellness Center. The Chair yoga teacher certification upgrade course was affordable and I was able to do it in my own time frame. The materials were comprehensive. I was very impressed. I was able to get a better understanding of chair/office yoga. I learned ideas and was able to redesign all my chair yoga classes. I am more confident teaching chair yoga and very proud to have the certificate. I’ve had the certificate for two years now, and was recently re-certified. I was so impressed with the training and support I received from Aura Wellness Center, that I decided to study for certification in another I’ve been interested in for a long time. I just started the Yoga Therapy Complete course from Aura Wellness. Thank you for having these options available! Elana Steinberg Greengus

Gene Purdum –
“I am so psyched to have completed the Level 1 Yoga Teacher Training and receive my certificate! Paul and his staff answered all my questions very quickly and thoroughly, and while the online option is mostly study and learn on your own it is nice to know there is assistance close by. I spent 10 months on the course, but I went through all the question very thoroughly and spent quite a bit of time refining my “class”. You could do it in less time. I happen to run a farm and spare time to study for yoga is often at a premium. I am 65 years old and had spinal surgery a few years ago, so I am limited in the asanas I can do. Still, I was able to design a Gentle Yoga class that I could confidently lead and give detailed verbal cues for the couple of poses I’m not able to do. An unexpectedly tricky part of this course proved to be producing a video of my class, which was filmed in a room with no sound system and by a neophyte with limited experience in using my laptop’s webcam and manipulating video files. I would HIGHLY recommend this course to anyone looking to get started in teaching yoga, even if you are like me and collecting Social Security.”

Once again I need to say a big thank you to Dr.Paul and Marie for the support and courses. I took this course because I wanted to help my less mobile students and some of my older relatives. This course has everything you need to know about chair yoga and teaching seniors. Explanations and guidance are clear and the videos are very well done. You will get support on any of your questions from Dr.Paul and his wonderful staff at any time during your training. Blessed regards to Paul Gerard and the Aura Wellness team and all the best for the future. Namaste!

Terrie McArthur –
It is no easy matter to gain certification in yoga through Aura Wellness Center. While that may sound like an indictment, just the opposite is the case.
The course arrives with many hours of research and study to complete. Once that is done, you are asked to submit a video, which is critiqued. After completing the course I felt very good about teaching Level 1 yoga at the Recreation Center in my home town. I have since completed a course in chair yoga and I’m working on a course in Restorative Yoga. Dr. Jerard and his staff have been very kind and helpful when I have asked for help. I would recommend their courses to anyone interested in teaching yoga.

Terrie McArthur –
I had been doing yoga off and on for many years when I finally decided to get serious about it. I started taking yoga at two Recreational Centers in my rather small town. At 55 years of age I learned my body had begun to desert me. But I was determined. Finally I signed up for Aura Wellness Level I Yoga In a Box. An online certification you might ask disdainfully. If that is the case, best to try one on from Aura Wellness. It is no cake walk. You will spend many hours preparing for the exams and the practical. I received all I needed to be able to teach beginning yoga, which I have been doing for several years.
At 70, I am now certified in Level I, Chair and Restorative Yoga. These classes give my senior students opportunities to move into better health, balance and flexibility. The courses are extremely difficult–that’s as it should be. I feel that I received all I needed to teach these classes.
Thanks so much to Aura Wellness, Dr. Paul Jerard and staff for all the valuable information. I refer to it all the time and am so glad to have completed these courses.
